A Travel Diary
Ten days on the Valley Isle — December 2019
Ten December days on Maui — the volcanic coast and blowholes of the northwest shore, the green spires of Iao Valley, the reef tanks of the Maui Ocean Center, snorkeling in turquoise shallows, and the cinder cones and cloud-top sunsets of Haleakala at 10,000 feet. Ten December days on Maui, the Valley Isle, and it packed in more landscapes than seemed fair for one island. The northwest shore gave us black volcanic coast and blowholes firing spray into the air; Iao Valley rose in green spires behind the clouds.
We snorkeled the turquoise shallows and wandered the reef tanks of the Maui Ocean Center, then drove up and up to the summit of Haleakalā — 10,000 feet, a moonscape of cinder cones, and a sunset that happens above the clouds. From reef to volcano in a single day.
This trip ran 7 days, December 17–26, 2019. Along the way we spent time at West Maui Coast & Blowholes, Haleakala Summit & Sunset, Iao Valley & Upcountry, and Snorkeling & Beaches. The gallery below tells it day by day, in 75 photographs.
