Colorado 2021

A week in Colorado in high summer, and the state kept changing under us. It started in red rock — the sandstone fins of the Garden of the Gods, the amphitheater at Red Rocks, and the long thin-air view from the top of Pikes Peak — with the cool dark of the Cave of the Winds underground and the improbable Great Sand Dunes rising against the mountains.

Then came Rocky Mountain National Park, which is where the trip really lived: moose standing in the lakes, elk grazing the meadows, marmots out on the tundra, and jewel-blue alpine lakes tucked under jagged peaks. Mile-high, and then a good deal higher.

This trip ran 8 days, July 17–24, 2021. Along the way we spent time at Rocky Mountain National Park, Red Rocks, Garden of the Gods & Pikes Peak, and Cave of the Winds & the Great Sand Dunes. The gallery below tells it day by day, in 91 photographs.
